Luleå University of Technology

Luleå University of Technology was founded in 1971 to promote science, engineering and industrial applications in the northern parts of Sweden. It has now some 12 500 students, a staff of 1500 and a turnover of more than 1 billion Swedish crowns (110 million Euros), see http://www.ltu.se.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, with a staff of 150 persons, specialises in Structural Engineering for Concrete, Steel, Wood, Fibre Reinforced Composite Polymers (FRCP), Rock and Ice. Over the last ten years extensive testing and analysis has been going on with Banverket, the Swedish Rail Administration, regarding assessment, upgrading and strengthening of Railway Bridges.

The university has several centres cooperating with industry and society e.g.

Some present and earlier EC projects are:

  • The European Rail Research Network of Excellence, EURNEX(TNE 3-CT-2003-506513);

  • Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC, BRPR-CT96-0366);

  • Improved Production of Advanced Cement Materials, IPACS (BRPR-CT97-0437);

  • Low level Ice forces, Loleif (MAS3-CT97-0098);

  • Structural Measurements in Ice, STRICE (EVG1-CT-2000-00024);

  • European Construction in Service of Society, Eco-Serve Network (G1RTCT-2002-050805).
