COWI A/S

COWI A/S is a multidisciplinary, internationally operating, engineering company with design, assessment and repair activities within traditional disciplines of civil, transportation, building and environmental engineering and planning. Since the start in 1930, COWI has participated in more than 25000 projects in 110 countries. Infrastructure construction and rehabilitation is one of COWI's main areas, and we are one of the international market leaders in bridge design and maintenance. Innovative and constructive solutions, minimising risks and costs, are provided by COWI's competent engineers, who are constantly engaged in planning, design, supervision and maintenance of bridges world-wide. Lately COWI has carried out line load capacity assessments in Denmark, upgrading for higher loads and velocity on the main railway corridor in Denmark Copenhagen - Padborg in connection with opening of the Great Belt Link in 1997. The re-qualification comprised 313 concrete bridges and 14 steel bridges. Special attention was given to the Little Belt Bridge, a riveted steel lattice bridge from 1935 with a total length of 825 m. Parallel to this project COWI has carried out a re-qualification of the bridges on all the railway lines on the Copenhagen Urban railway network in 1997-1999 due to higher single axle loads from new S-trains with higher velocity.
