Wroclaw University of Technology

Owing to its centuries long scholarly and cultural tradition, Wroclaw is the third largest academic center in Poland (after Warsaw and Cracow). It is home to 11 institutions of university-level education: Wroclaw University, Wroclaw University of Technology, the Medical Academy, the Academy of Agriculture, the Academy of Economics, the Academy of Music, the Academy of Physical Education, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Theatre Academy, the Faculty of Theology and Military School. Wroclaw University of Technology is the second largest university in Wroclaw in terms of the number of students. The total enrolment of these schools is 111,000 students. Considering that Wroclaw has a population of 640,000, one can easily calculate that one out of 6 people is a student at one of Wroclaw's institutions of university-level education.

Main Building of the Wroclaw University of Technology

Wroclaw University of Technology (WUT) was founded in 1945. The university offers a wide variety of degree programs organized into eleven faculties. The total enrolment at WTU amounts to 32,000 part and full-time students. The university's staff consist of 2,060 academic teachers working at 28 institutes. Faculty of Civil Engineering has about 3,200 students and 250 academic teachers.

Bridge Group of the Institute of Civil Engineering with the permanent staff of 15 persons (+10 Ph.D. students) is the biggest bridge engineering group at Polish universities. Bridge Group is involved in very active cooperation with railway and road administration in Poland. Since 1992 the group is responsible for design, development and implementation of the Railway Bridge Management System "SMOK" for the Polish State Railways. Since 1997 system "SMOK" is implemented in all railway administration offices in the whole country.
